We have a wonderful edition to the PTS Brandon clinic’s lobby! Special thanks to one of our parents, Brooke Elkins, who painted our new PTS logo on our main wall. Brooke is a talented artist who took time out of her busy day to make our lobby a happy and welcoming place for our patients and their families. See her work in progress and the wonderful final result in these pictures. Thank you, Brooke!

In August of 2016, I was given the opportunity to attend a mission trip through Orphan’s Heart at a malnutrition center in San Juan, Guatemala. When I heard about the trip through my church in Lakeland and knew it would involve working with the pediatric and special needs population I knew it would be a great opportunity. I attended this trip with a previous PTS employee and physical therapist, Miss. Gia. The trip started off by the plane having to make an emergency landing in El Salvador due to an issue with the brakes and the runway in Guatemala being wet, it was too risky. Where we arrived, there were thousands of people lined up outside the airport to greet their loved ones. After we made it through customs, we were sent to a hotel on a bus where we spent the night.
We headed to Guatemala in the morning. Our first stop was a coffee plantation where we were able to either go on a coffee tour or go zip lining. The next morning, we headed to the malnutrition center. The children at the center essentially live there because their families do not have the financial means and resources to feed them and provide them with a healthy childhood; the average income in San Juan is between 1,200-2,000 US dollars per year. These children live at the center and their parents and family have the opportunity to visit them weekly. The children are followed by a pediatrician, social worker and nutritionist and are sent home when all three professionals feel they are ready and once their families show they have the means to care for them.
While we were at the center, we worked to lead the children in daily activity time such as crafts, time outdoors, free-play and music time. It was essential that we spent time 1:1 with each child because many of these children were severely delayed in all motor skills. Some of the main things that stood out to me during this trip were the drastic differences between being a therapist in the clinic and being a volunteer at the center. As a therapist, the focus is often on age-appropriate skills and making improvements toward goals involving language, gross motor and fine motor tasks. At the center, the focus is on nutrition. It is not important if the children are feeding themselves and holding utensils properly, it is more important that they meet caloric needs. The nannies, who spend each day with the children, feed them as quickly as possible during each meal. There is often only one nanny assigned to each room of 10 – 15 children at a time.
The children are often required to entertain themselves, so they love when teams go out and visit them because they are given more 1:1 time. It was admirable to see that even though these children have close to nothing they were still so happy. I am looking forward to going back and learning even more from these little ones.
Our Pediatric Therapists have a passion for children, working to develop each child’s abilities.
Your child may have a condition known as tongue thrust. Tongue thrust is the common name for a disorder in which a person pushes his tongue against or between his teeth during a swallow. Tongue thrust can affect children, adolescents, and adults.
Some of the most common causes of tongue thrust include infant feeding difficulties, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, sucking on thumbs or fingers, mouth breathing or other genetic factors, such as abnormal dentition.
A normal swallow includes precise movements of the tongue, teeth and facial muscles. In a normal swallow, the tongue tip is raised to a spot behind the front teeth. The rest of the tongue is pushed up against the roof of the mouth, trapping food and liquids. The back teeth are together, and the swallow is accomplished without tensing of the facial muscles.
Any deviation from this is an incorrect swallow.
A trained speech-language pathologist (SLP) examines the child’s oral structures and tongue positioning during rest, swallowing and speech. The SLP also performs a case history to see if any associated oral behaviors are present.
Therapy for tongue thrust is divided up into 12 lessons. The first five lessons are used to train the different muscles of the swallow to obtain the correct resting pattern and placement. Lessons six and seven teach the child how the correct swallow is performed. The last four lessons teach the child how to make the normal swallow a habit.
The first eight lessons take place once per week for 30 minutes. The last four lessons take place every two weeks. After the 12 lessons are completed, the child should be seen every 3-6 months for two years. At the end of the treatment, if the child is still producing articulation errors, additional speech sessions may be recommended.
The holidays are just around the corner! One of our speech-language pathologists compiled a list of books and toys that would make great gifts and also help to promote speech and language development.
Also check out this website recommended by one of our parents: www.fatbraintoys.com. They have a great search engine to find the perfect gift. You can search by gender, age, price, categories (books, games, puzzles, etc.), and interests (dinosaurs, fairy tales, science).
Your doctor or pediatrician determines whether or not your child is overweight by comparing your child’s weight and height ratio to their age and growth patterns.
Some of the most common causes are: genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. In rare cases being overweight is caused by a medical condition such as hormonal problems. A child’s activity level and diet are one of the most important factors in determining a child’s weight. Currently, children spend an average of 4 hours a day watching television, gaming or using computers!
These children are at risk for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, early heart disease, diabetes, bone problems, and skin conditions. A study done tracking thousands of children through adulthood found that heavier children were twice as likely as the thinnest to die prematurely, before age 55, of either illness or a self-inflicted injury
The physical therapist evaluates aerobic capacity, postural control, motor and sensory function, balance, endurance and gait. From the assessment, the therapist develops a specialized plan/treatment focusing on safe/efficient movements, aligned posture, flexibility, balance, strength, and endurance. A home exercise program helps the family continue with the child’s success and progress towards a healthy lifestyle.
Our Pediatric Therapists have a passion for children, working to develop each child’s abilities.
Babywearing is the practice of wearing or carrying a baby in a sling or in another form of carrier. Babywearing hs been practiced for centuries around the world and has gained popularity in the industrialized world in recent decades.
Babywearing is awesome for bonding with baby as you are always touching your baby when babywearing. Because your hands are free you are able to get more done while still having your hands available to touch baby. Babywearing promotes your baby’s healthy development and assists in preventing or lessening David Bakhtiari Youth Jersey Torticollis and Flat Head Syndrome (plagiocephaly).
While babywearing you are able to check that your baby Davon House Authentic Jersey gets equal head-turning. You are able to catch any asymmetries in head turning and try simple strategies to help your little one stretch and strengthen out of them.
Babywearing can be great for your baby’s development, when it’s done safely and correctly. There are tons of different styles of slings, wraps and carriers and each should come with directions and safety information to follow. But here’s one safety check you’ve probably never heard of that is super important for your baby’s health and development.
Newborns most often rest a cheek against your chest when worn while older babies frequently lean their heads back from your chest and turn to look around while worn. Regardless of your baby’s age and what type of sling, wrap or structured carrier you use, check which direction your baby’s head is most often turned when worn.
If you notice your baby spending more time looking one direction or with one cheek to your chest more than the other, help and encourage your baby to turn the opposite direction.

Why Do Babies Need Tummy Time?
Babies need tummy time because they are spending more and more time on their backs, largely in part to the Back to Sleep program and the wide use of infant carriers outside of cars. This combination of back sleeping at night and daytime pressure on the infant’s head can create a flattening of the skull. Increasing the amount of time your baby lies on his tummy:
Tummy Time Is:
Carrying
Positions for Play
Positioning
Feeding
Sleeping
